Another stamp from regular reader James Schadla-Hall, this time on a postcard from Northumberland. I remember going to Alnwick for my A-level geography field trip and carry many memories of the visit. From hanging around the bookies in Alnwick to following the Aln from source to sea. it was also the first time I’d seen massive heavy industrial areas which came as quite a shock.
Olympic fever! I like the wrestlers.
Only found out about this on Friday but I’m featured on a Headphone Commute mix from Jonathan Lees, who runs the wonderful Hibernate Recordings and Rural Colours labels. It’s great to be hanging about in such great company. The track featured is called ‘Sing to me’ and is from the work I finished in June. The work is entitled ‘humming new time’ and only three people have heard the whole of it so far! I’ve got the mastered version back now and I’m really happy with it. Not sure how it’s to be distributed yet, both physically or digitally, but hope to have that sorted by the end of the month. Hunstanton is a small seaside town along the north edge of the county of Norfolk (though I think it’s under King’s Lynn and West Norfolk council). It’s sort of split in two halves referred to as Old Hunstanton and New Hunstanton. This post is about New Hunstanton.
It’s a proper British seasidey town – there’s a lot less of the delis and art galleries you see in other North Norfolk towns. It has a traditional sea front that doesn’t seem to have the money lavished on it that Cromer has.
It often feels as if it’s stuck in a particular time or, rather, a particular time in my memory. Here are some photos I took whilst I was there and a recording of Thomas’s Bingo – an amusement arcade and bingo hall on the seafront.
It also has a Sea Life Centre – an excellent way of entertaining children!

Then these two below, I know there just regular stamps with the Queen on but I love the shine of the ‘ROYAL MAIL’ background. Is it some kind of anti-counterfeiting thing?
One of my snapshot iphone field recordings done with the SoundCloud App has been utilised by another SoundCloud user for their own piece of music.
This piece recorded in my works garden has been used by nojoined for his piece ‘a lack of faith‘. It’s fascinating listening to it how my original recording is altered and transformed as the piece moves on – this is probably due to me remembering the actual sounds whilst there, the mind trying to put the two together.
I really like the SoundCloud app and the way it allows you to share spur of the moment sounds like this and identify and log them to their location and time. That they can then be used as inspiration for something else through the sharing of is also brilliant too. A score for creativity.

Rescued from a parcel for my attention by the good Paul Jones of PWJ Photography this was attached to some crazy paper with a man prepped for full BBQ action. I have no idea why.
Went to the Birmingham Zine Fair yesterday to. Held at We Are Birmingham, it was loads better than the Nottingham one (sorry but it’s true!) with loads of stalls and contributors. We Are Brimingham is a nice airy bright space just a short walk up from the Bullring. There was so much good stuff there it was tricky taking it all in – bombarded with so much imagery! It would have been very easy to wander in and be £80 but before you know it! My stash is below. There was so much more I wanted to get but only so much money I had to spend.
I really did want everything on Luke Pearson‘s stall though.
Though I didn’t get to see it, I talked to a friend about the Home Of Metal exhibition at the Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery. Was interested in it anyway but since finding out they’ve got a little section dedicated to Napalm Death, I DEFINITELY want to go there now.
